A Step-Wise Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Approach of Central Pontine and Extra Pontine Myelinosis in Locked-In Syndrome: A Case Report
Authors
Abstract:
Central Pontine Myelinosis (CPM) and Extra Pontine Myelinosis (EPM) are debilitating conditions, resulting from the rapid correction of hyponatremia. The outcome and prognosis of this medical condition are variable; mainly involving functional decline from neuro-musculoskeletal upset. An intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation has played an essential role in facilitating and hasten recovery, promoting a favorable outcome. We reported our experience in rehabilitating a patient with a rare condition of comorbid CPM and EPM. The reported patient presented with disabling Locked-In Syndrome (LIS) and Parkinsonism movement disorder. We highlighted the stepwise rehabilitation approach according to Patterson and Grabois Motor Recovery scale for LIS in preventing and reversing the complication and disabilities caused by CPM and EPM that may facilitate favorable therapeutic outcomes

Locked-in Syndrome due to Central Pontine Myelinolysis: Case Report
Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) classically occurs in alcoholics, malnourished individuals, chronic liver diseases, and rapid correction of hyponatremia. This report presents locked-in syndrome due to CPM following rapid correction of hyponatremia. A 44-year-old male came to the hospital due to a short period of loss of consciousness. He was alert and had no focal neurological abnormalities ...
full textExtra-axial medulloblastoma in cerebello-pontine angle: A report of a rare case with literature review
Medulloblastoma is quite uncommon in the adult population and even rarer in extra-axial site in cerebello- pontine (CP) angle. In this report, a 23-year-old male patient with a two month history of deafness, nausea, vomiting and ataxia is presented. Clinical and radiological findings demonstrated a heterogeneously enhanced extra-axial lesion in the right CP angle. Total excision was perform...
full textRecovery of locked-in syndrome in central pontine myelinolysis
We read, with great interest, the article “Recovery of lockedin syndrome following liver transplantation with calcineurin inhibitor cessation and supportive treatment” by El Moghazy et al. [1]. The authors present an important clinical observation on a favorable recovery of locked-in syndrome due to central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) in association with liver transplantation, hyponatremia, and ...
full textCentral Pontine Myelinolysis. (a Case Report).
The first case of central pontine myelinolysis in Scandinavia is presented. A premortem diagnosis was established on the basis of the history of chronic alcoholism, the picture of severe electrolyte disturbance and the development of the neurological syndrome. The postmortem findings verified the clinical diagnosis. A possible aetiological mechanism is postulated. The cause is believed to be a ...
full textAsymptomatic Central Pontine Myelinolysis: A Case Report
INTRODUCTION Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is an acquired demyelinating lesion of the basis pontis that typically occurs after rapid correction of hyponatremia. There are only a few reported cases of patients without symptoms that have demonstrated CPM on imaging. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 26-year-old Hispanic male with history of alcohol abuse who was transferred to our ...
